After months of preparation and glamorous outfit unveilings, African film stars are arriving at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos tonight for the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).

This year’s ceremony, hosted by comedian Bovi and South African actress Nomzamo Mbatha, promises electrifying performances, unforgettable moments, and stunning fashion displays on the red carpet for both guests and viewers watching from home.

The hosting lineup marks a major change in AMVCA history, as Bovi and Mbatha step into roles previously held by IK Osakioduwa, who anchored the awards for 11 consecutive years since its launch in 2013. Widely regarded as one of the defining faces of the AMVCA, Osakioduwa’s exit signals the beginning of a fresh era for the prestigious event.

Expectations are already high as fans look forward to seeing whether the new hosts can match the energy, humour, and stage presence that became synonymous with IK’s long reign.

As always, the night will celebrate excellence in African film and television across categories such as Best Movie, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, among others.

This year’s battle for top honours is expected to centre around The Herd and Ginger, with both productions leading the nominations with nine nods each. Directed by Daniel Etim-Effiong, The Herd gained attention for its bold portrayal of Nigeria’s long-standing insecurity challenges, sparking intense conversations following its release.

Meanwhile, Ginger — a gripping blend of comedy and crime produced by Kiekie, Bisola Aiyeola, Bolaji Ogunmola, and Wunmi Toriola — has earned praise for its suspense-filled storytelling after successful premieres in London and the United States.

Other strong contenders include To Kill A Monkey, My Father’s Shadow, and Funke Akindele’s Behind The Scenes, which remains one of Nollywood’s most commercially successful productions.

The Best Actor category is shaping up to be one of the night’s toughest battles, featuring stars such as Kanayo O. Kanayo, Wale Ojo, Femi Branch, Mike Ezuruonye, and Lateef Adedimeji.

In the Best Actress category, Linda Ejiofor is considered a strong favourite for her role in The Serpent’s Gift, although competition from stars like Sola Sobowale, Gloria Anozia-Young, Scarlet Gomez, Bimbo Akintola, and Genevieve Umoh is expected to keep the race interesting.

Away from the awards, the AMVCA red carpet remains one of the biggest attractions of the night. Celebrities are expected to showcase bold African couture, luxury fashion, and avant-garde designs as they compete to deliver the most talked-about looks.

Last year’s event generated massive reactions online after standout appearances from stars including Nana Akua Addo, Pretty Mike, Osas Ighodaro, Mercy Aigbe, and Doyin David went viral across social media.

With fierce competition, dazzling fashion, unforgettable performances, and millions of viewers across Africa tuning in, AMVCA 2026 is already shaping up to be one of the most memorable editions in the history of the awards.
